Earth Day 2026: The Fund’s 10th Anniversary
Today I mark the 10th anniversary of the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund, a Donor-Advised Fund I established on Earth Day April 22, 2016, to continue the legacy of my late husband.
In announcing the Fund back then, I wrote:
“Greg came from a modest background – and despite or perhaps because of that, he went out of his way to help others as soon as he had the means to do so. I established this Fund to continue Greg’s legacy of caring for all animals, human and non-human. The fund will focus on helping the most helpless – and on shaking up conventional thinking about animals, which Greg liked to do. More concretely, it will focus on three areas – animal rescue, veganism, and wildlife conservation – to which Greg was most dedicated in life.”
Ten years on, much has changed in the wider world, and the Fund’s focus areas have evolved – but the core mission remains the same.
Here’s a quick look back at a few highlights of these last ten years.
During 2025-26 to date, the Fund has made grants to A Well-Fed World, Faunalytics, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Sentient Media.
Other grantees in the Fund’s history have included the Animal Place Food for Thought program, the Transfarmation Project of Mercy for Animals, Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, and Woodstock Farm Sanctuary.
I’ve been grateful for professional management under The Foundation for Enhancing Communities in Harrisburg, PA since 2022, and under other entities in the years prior. I’ve also been grateful for contributions into the Fund from many friends across the United States, who have helped extend the Fund’s reach.
In addition to making grants through the Fund, I have also personally supported a number of these organizations by volunteering time to education and outreach initiatives, doing physical work with animals, and personally adopting rescued dogs and horses.
As the world of 2026 presents us with new and greater challenges, I’ll continue doing my little part to promote compassion for animals and people.
