PETA’s 9th Annual Greg Award to Eduxanima, Romania

Today on Greg’s 61st birthday, I am excited to share that PETA – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has presented its 2024 9th annual Gregory J. Reiter Animal Rescue Award to Eduxanima in Romania.

Romania has perhaps the largest homeless animal population in Europe — with an estimated 600,000 stray dogs living on streets or in woods, and likely even more stray cats.

For the last five years, Eduxanima has worked in partnership with PETA Germany to tackle Romania’s homeless animal problem at its source — sterilizing some 35,000 animals in 45 villages while also delivering vaccines, general veterinary care, and more.

Eduxanima is also bringing humane education to Romanian schools, and working with lawmakers on animal protection policies.

And that’s not all! Eduxanima has provided ongoing support for those fleeing the war in Ukraine with their animal companions.

I personally became aware of the scope of animal suffering in Romania more than fifteen years ago, through my work in international relations, when several colleagues were involved in projects to save animals there. With this awareness of the immense challenges Eduxanima is confronting, I particularly admire the team’s achievements.

I was also touched to read this note that Eduxanima president Carmen Arsene wrote when she was notified of the award: “We know Gregory Reiter as being a wonderful person, a wonderful animal lover, and we’ll honor his values in our continuous work for the animals in need in Romania and for animal rights.”
