Plant-Based Food Assistance

This holiday season, the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund has made grants to three organizations — first-time recipient A Well-Fed World, and established partners People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine — focusing on plant-based food assistance in this time of unprecedented need.

🌱 NEW GRANTEE SPOTLIGHT 🌱

A Well-Fed World, founded in 2009, is a plant-based hunger relief and climate advocacy organization that supports plant-based meal shares, food pantries, community farms and more in nearly 100 countries. The Greg Fund has made a grant this season to support A Well-Fed World’s U.S. hunger relief fundraiser.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2025, works on the principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. PETA advocates for vegan living in order to save animals and promote human health and a cleaner global environment. The Greg Fund has made a grant this season to support PETA’s vegan campaign, which includes distributing plant-based roasts in partnership with local organizations throughout North America.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, marking its 40th anniversary this year, works to save and improve human and animal lives through plant-based diets and ethical and effective scientific research. The Greg Fund has made a contribution this season to support Physicians Committee resources that include The Exam Room podcast, a library of tips for budget-friendly plant-based meals and food bank donations, and a grant program that brings Food for Life plant-based nutrition classes to underserved communities.

THANK YOU to …

The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (Harrisburg, PA), one of the earliest U.S. community foundations, which has served as this Fund’s manager since New Year 2022.

    Hello!

I run a local vegan food bank in Erie, PA. Compassionate Actions Project is a non-profit 501c3. Other names better describing our food bank are d/b/a Healthy Vegetarian Food Bank and d/b/a Kind Veg. The EIN is 27-2627420. We are a volunteer driven non-profit and work with social service agencies to deliver fresh fruits, vegetables, frozen vegan meat and dairy alternatives to these agencies. We also provide non-refrigerated foods to agencies.

We work independent of the local Second Harvest Food Bank, because they cannot gaurantee all the food we would purchase would be vegan. We purchase food from discount grocery stores and also have vegan food drives.

We have always filed the 990-N, but this year filed the longer 990 hoping more funders will see the good work we do to provide healthy plant foods for people in need, without causing harm to animals. We are still waiting for the IRS to publish it on Charity Navigator.

We have earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency with Guide Star/ Candid for the last five years and I uploaded the 990 on my business profile site with them. I could also email this to you if you like. I have a few dedicated vegan volunteers that help me a little each month. I do the majority of the work for my non-profit, and have never taken a salary. I have been able to run this vegan food bank since 2010 with my husband David supporting us.

I would like to apply for a grant with the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund. Thank you so much!
