2024 Highlights for Animals & People
Since 2016, the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund has supported programs that both promote animal rights and benefit people.
I’m proud to share 2024 highlights of work the Fund supported — responding to animal crises around the world, modernizing research, promoting plant-based human health, and transforming agriculture.

Responding to Global Crises
In 2024, for the 4th consecutive year, the Greg Fund contributed to PETA’s Global Compassion Fund.
This work included:
- Ukraine: Partnering with Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), as PETA has done since Russia’s February 2022 invasion — helping move some 20,000 animals to other countries and to the safest possible locations within Ukraine, while delivering millions of pounds of supplies. “Each rescued life is a small victory in this war,” says ARK, recipient of PETA’s 2023 Gregory J. Reiter Animal Rescue Award. The video 1000 DAYS OF MERCY vividly depicts this courageous work.
- Romania: Partnering with Eduxanima to reduce what is believed to be the largest homeless animal population in Europe — sterilizing some 35,000 animals in 45 villages, while also delivering vaccines, general veterinary care, and more. Eduxanima received PETA’s 2024 Gregory J. Reiter Animal Rescue Award.

Modernizing Research
In 2024, for the 7th year, the Greg Fund gave grants for research modernization work to both prevent the suffering of animals in experiments and produce better outcomes for people. 2024 grantees in this category were People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).
Results included:
- In February, the US National Institutes of Health committed to promoting non-animal research, following a bipartisan letter from US Congress members that referenced PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
- In June, the US Department of Justice ordered Inotiv, a breeder of beagles for experiments, to pay a record $35 million in criminal fines for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act and Clean Water Act at its now-closed Envigo facility in Virginia — an order that stemmed from PETA’s 2021 investigation and subsequent work with state and federal authorities.
- In September, Charles River Labs, the world’s largest breeder of animals for experiments, cancelled plans for a facility to house 43,000 primates on ecologically sensitive land next to a wildlife refuge in Brazoria County, Texas. This decision came after opposition from PETA and the local community.

Promoting Plant-Based Human Health
In 2024, for the 6th consecutive year, the Greg Fund was a sponsor of The Exam Room Live on YouTube and Facebook, and The Exam Room Podcast, from nutrition experts at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Sponsored episodes included:
- Five Foods to Eat for Weight Loss
- Autoimmune Diseases: Foods That Help
- Bird Flu: Is Your Milk Safe?
- Foods for Happiness
- Flu Symptoms and Treatments

Transforming Agriculture
In 2024, for the 2nd year, the Greg Fund contributed to The Transfarmation Project of Mercy for Animals — which helps farmers transition from industrial animal agriculture to raising crops for human consumption, with the goal of creating a just and sustainable food system. In September, I was privileged to attend the launch of the first demonstration hub in Wadesboro, North Carolina.
The Greg Fund also contributed in 2024, for the 3rd consecutive year, to Woodstock Farm Sanctuary’s Fair Campaign — which is working to end cruel practices at state and county fairs in New York and across North America.

The Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund is managed by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC), Harrisburg, PA. While the Fund runs primarily on assets Greg left behind, it has also expanded its reach through donations from friends and supporters.
