Happy 10th adoption anniversary to Charlie!
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) rescued “Charlie’s Quest” in summer 2016, after years in the racing industry had taken a severe toll on his body — and he came to live with me that September 21.
Back then, the examining vet wrote: “Charlie has quadrilateral lameness, some of which is very severe — and even with a pampered life as a pasture companion, he will continue to have degenerative changes that will worsen over time.”
I have indeed pampered Charlie, and he has indeed experienced painful episodes with his hooves and fetlocks – but he’s a determined guy, I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing farriers, and his overall quality of life has exceeded initial expectations.
I provide for Charlie’s care with my personal resources — but his story has also inspired my support, through the Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund, for PETA’s work to end numerous horse racing industry abuses. Details in the April 2024 blog Charlie at 15 – now half his life free.
