Today Margaret kitty succumbed to cancer, just one day after her cuddle buddy Itchy dog. She was gorgeous and graceful to the end, even when fluid buildup around her lungs made it difficult for her to eat or breathe.
Greg and I adopted Margaret from Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF) in September 2008, when she was a young adult with background largely unknown. She was called “Siren” back then – but we renamed her in honor of Margaret Cavendish (1623-73), the first documented opponent of animal testing. (Earlier that year, Greg and I had had some difficulties – and the Stray Cat Cafe affiliated with LDCRF was always the “magic place” where we went out to eat in order to resolve those difficulties.)
It always truly takes a village to care for an animal over the course of his or her life. In Margaret’s case, Family Veterinary Hospital of Stone Ridge, Middleburg Animal Hospital and Your Dog Smiles Pet Sitting Services were absolutely key for Margaret and our other cats and dogs during Greg’s and my Middleburg, VA years.
During my most recent few months in Frederick County, MD, Yellow Springs Veterinary Clinic performed the surgery that gave Margaret a few extra weeks of quality life, and then performed humane euthanasia at the end – a gift we are allowed to give to our companion animals, which unfortunately is not an option for most American humans at this point in time.
Friends have suggested that Greg needed another friend to help him celebrate his upcoming birthday. I hope he and they are having a marvelous party!
